You can save money at Costco and Sam's club. But there is a catch, they make you pay for those savings. First of all they add unnecessary stress strife and frustration to your life by constantly pestering you to upgrade which means simply paying more money for the same thing. Gee guys I thought the whole idea here was to save money not pay you more money. The other thing that it requires is your time to actually look at the deals where you're saving significant money. Generally you're going to be buying more and there are times when you're simply buying more for more money. Or you may be buying more and saving a tiny little bit but the hassle factor of having a whole bunch of stuff doesn't really make up for the savings. For instance if we ever have some sort of massive disaster it would be nice to have 100 lb bag of rice sitting around, but until then it's just a big bulky bag of rice sitting around and I'm using a tiny little bit of on a weekly basis.
So if you're willing to put up with their constant harassment to upgrade and to donate to a bunch of stuff that you don't care anything about then it can be a good deal.
Here are some things that seem like a pretty good deal to me
- Toilet paper
- Bottled water
- Some kitchen accessories
- Some boxed cereals
- Hot chocolate on sale
- Some alcohol
- Bottled pickles
- Bottled jalapeno slices
- Some frozen meat like shrimp
- Some fresh pies like pecan
- Mustard when they have it
- The powdered fiber
Here are some not good deals
- The glasses department
- The tire department
- Most personal hygiene products
- Fresh meats
- Electronics
The reason these are not good deals is they are selling you upscale products for a small discount. Well I'm the guy that wants the average product for a discount. So $150 electric men's shaver for $100 is a ridiculously bad deal for me. I would rather have the electric men's shaver that's $70 for $48. Notice that the shaver I end up with is 50% less than the shaver they wanted to sell me.
