alcohol on vacation

An important part of any vacation is getting enough alcohol. But you don't want to miss the whole vacation, so moderation is called for.

In 2022 here is a basic list of what cheap alcohol runs in my area:

  • $20 - Case of beer
  • $20 - 1.75ltr vodka
  • $18 - 3ltr box wine

Beer in this price range is hardly worth drinking. On a rare occasion you'll find some great deal like Samuel Adams on sale for about a dollar a bottle. All the national brands are unoffensive and contain alcohol. Almost any local brewery is going to do better. Not sure why this is. The only beer I would stay away from is coffee beer. It sounds like a great combination, but the ones I've had are super bitter.

Vodka in this price range is okay. The more expensive vodka is a little bit smoother. Platinum and McCormick are a little cheaper and still okay. Do NOT go with The very cheap stuff. Some local vodkas can be surprisingly good, like Rocky mountain vodka.

Box wine is basically okay as long as it's not too watery. Black box and barefoot make okay selections.

Interesting thoughts:

Vodka has the highest alcohol content. So if you want something that's easy to pack just take vodka. You can mix it with anything from milk to soda, put it in coffee or anything. A 1.75 ltr bottle of vodka has about the same amount of alcohol as two and a half cases of beer. Some people really like beer and you can just throw it in the trunk. Wine has a different effect for me and I like it, but some people like beer or mixed drinks.
